"A $158 billion economic stimulus plan drafted by Senate Democrats that included relief for low-income seniors, disabled veterans and the unemployed was blocked by a Republican filibuster last night when the Senate fell a single vote short of the 60 needed to consider the measure.

Harry wasted no time. "'Given a chance to act as recession looms, more than 40 Republicans today said no to helping 20 million seniors and no to 250,000 disabled veterans. They said no to those who have lost their jobs and no to small business,' Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said after the vote."

A let them eat cake moment. Senator Thune explains. Bloomberg (02.07.08):

"Republicans who opposed the plan said the Senate Finance Committee last week added provisions that might bring a Bush veto.

'The president has made it clear that he doesn't want that extension of unemployment benefits,' Republican Senator John Thune (R - SD) said."

Senate Republicans Block Plan to Expand U.S. Economic Stimulus

"Republicans said they wanted to amend the House version to give tax rebates to senior citizens and disabled veterans who were initially left out, without adding the jobless benefits or home heating aid for the poor that were in the Finance Committee bill."

The House bill contemplates a $278 billion giveaway over the next three years. The Senate bill would have added about $80 billion to that.
